Fishing for Nothing

I was inspired to create a short film about fishing, an activity that has special meaning for me. It is also the subject of my personal statement for the common application. While filming, I was able to experiment with reflection as I had this body of water as a large mirror. I wanted to juxtapose the images of the man-made modern architecture and the proximity of it to the natural environment. There were also a lot of trial and error opportunities with angles and framing. This is the only film in my portfolio where I include myself as one of the actors (the one with the baseball hat) so it was a challenge going back and forth, to position my camera and then get in front of the camera and then go back behind the camera again. It certainly gave me a different perspective.

Borderline

I was inspired by the pressure many my age experience these days, especially in Korea, to succeed academically. I wanted to capture that feeling of disappointment and disillusionment when one feels that he or she isn’t living up to the standard. I made the decision to get close to the subject which is a technique many cinematographers I admire do which actually makes me uncomfortable but I felt like it was necessary here to convey the emotions and the urgency of the moment, which the actor conveyed with her facial expressions and body language.

Lessons Unlearned

This was a short film I created for the Genius Olympiad Competition 2021. The topic was the environment and my film reflects the disillusionment many in my generation feel about how our society is dealing with climate change. It was awarded an Honorable Mention and a 12,000 USD scholarship upon attending RIT. In this film, I was able to experiment with angles and deliberately shot some of the scenes at waist level to imitate the medium format film camera's viewfinder. This was a creative choice to capture the landscape of the abandoned complex without diluting the focus on the subject's actions.

“Alone Again”

Aspect ratio is something that I enjoy fidgeting with in my shorter, experimental like films. This film, “Alone Again,” is a prime example of a film that I had the opportunity of messing around with. One thing to note in this film is the origins of the idea. The idea for this film did not sprout from me. This film in fact is a replica of an aesthetically appealing video that I had seen on YouTube, which I decided to create a replica of using color palettes that I favor.

Amy

Inspired by Joji's music video "Slow Dancing In the Dark," this experimental film captures the story of an individual undergoing internal struggles.

Ice Cubes 1

This film, "Ice Cubes 1,” is a extremely short film that I created with an emphasis on auditory experience.

Locked In

This was a film I created for the All American High School Film Festival in 2021, in which I placed as an official selection. This project was done with two others: Matthew Chun as the Editor and Julie Shin as the actress in film.
